Description
Seen from the left lateral aspect beneath a transparent skin envelope, the deltoid muscle caps the shoulder and wraps from the lateral third of the clavicle and acromion to the deltoid tuberosity on the lateral humeral shaft. Its anterior (clavicular) fibers lie anterolateral to the glenohumeral joint, the middle (acromial) fibers form the broad lateral contour, and the posterior (spinal) fibers sit posterolateral, arising from the spine of the scapula. Deep to the deltoid, the scapula rests against the posterolateral thoracic cage, with the acromion projecting superiorly over the humeral head and the proximal humerus aligned inferior to the lateral margin of the acromion. Bony context remains readable in profile, including the mandible and dentition, cervical vertebrae, and the rib cage curving inferiorly from the shoulder girdle. Deltoid anatomy matters because abduction strength and shoulder contour depend on the balance between the deltoid and the rotator cuff, and this lateral view clarifies why isolated deltoid contraction without cuff depression of the humeral head can narrow the subacromial space and aggravate impingement-type pain. Palpable landmarks, the acromion and deltoid tuberosity, guide safe intramuscular injection placement in the mid-deltoid, while reminding the clinician that the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery course deep to the deltoid around the surgical neck of the humerus. Clinical anatomy. It is also a clean setup for discussing axillary nerve palsy after anterior shoulder dislocation, where deltoid atrophy flattens the lateral shoulder.
