Description
Laterally, the deltoid (musculus deltoideus) forms the rounded contour of the male shoulder, with the acromial (middle) fibers most prominent over the lateral aspect of the glenohumeral joint. Its anterior (clavicular) part lies anterosuperior and blends toward the deltopectoral region, while the posterior (spinal) part sits posterolateral, adjacent to the scapular spine and posterior axillary fold. All three parts converge inferiorly onto the deltoid tuberosity of the humerus (brachium), draping superficial to the rotator cuff and the subacromial space. Orientation matters. A clean lateral view of the deltoid is the teaching workhorse for correlating surface anatomy with deeper structures that clinicians target every day. It frames the safe region for intramuscular injection in the mid-deltoid, placed approximately 2 to 3 fingerbreadths inferior to the acromion to reduce risk to the axillary nerve and posterior circumflex humeral artery as they traverse the quadrangular space and wrap around the surgical neck. This angle also supports discussion of subacromial impingement and rotator cuff pathology, where deltoid force couples can accentuate superior humeral head migration when the supraspinatus is torn.
