Description
Seen from a lateral perspective, the frontal portion of the pia mater closely invests the cerebral cortex of the male brain, draping over the frontal lobe gyri and dipping medially and inferiorly into the sulci rather than bridging them. Fine pial vessels course within the membrane along the convexity, tracking into cortical grooves as they approach penetrating arterioles. Inferiorly, the pial covering continues toward the basal surface where the brainstem emerges, maintaining continuity across the frontobasal region. Pia mater matters because it is the interface between the cortical surface and the subarachnoid space, where aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage first spreads and where blood products can track along sulci over the frontal convexity. This view also supports teaching of the meninges as a layered system: dura and arachnoid form the external envelope, while pia adheres to brain and accompanies vessels as they enter perivascular (Virchow-Robin) spaces. It is a practical angle for explaining why cortical contusions after blunt trauma often involve superficial vessels along gyral crests and sulcal margins. Neurology and neuroanatomy courses use this kind of rendering to distinguish pia from arachnoid and to reinforce how meningeal membranes relate to gyri, sulci, and the brainstem at the cranial base.
