Description
Across the dorsum of the male cerebrum, the pia mater is rendered as a thin, translucent meningeal membrane draped tightly over the cortical surface, conforming to the superior frontal gyrus and precentral region anteriorly and continuing posteriorly across the postcentral gyrus into the superior parietal lobule. Along the midline, the longitudinal fissure separates right and left hemispheres, and the pia follows the lips of the fissure as it invests the medial margins of each hemisphere. Cortical gyri project superiorly while sulci descend inferiorly and medially, and the pial layer tracks into those grooves rather than bridging them, emphasizing its intimate adherence to the underlying neural tissue. Fine surface relief is the point. That adherence matters when you are teaching why subarachnoid blood tracks along sulci and cisterns, or when correlating leptomeningeal enhancement on contrast MRI with infectious meningitis, carcinomatous meningitis, or inflammatory disease. A dorsal pial view also clarifies the anatomic plane that surgeons and anatomists reference when describing the subarachnoid space: the interval deep to pia and superficial to the brain, where arachnoid trabeculae and pial vessels course. It is a clean way to separate “leptomeninges” (pia plus arachnoid) from dura in a learner’s mental model.
