Description
Seen in lateral profile, the procerus occupies the glabellar region over the nasal bridge, arising from the nasal bone and upper lateral nasal cartilage and blending superiorly into the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the inferior frontal region. Anterior to it lie the nasal dorsum and nasal cavity contours, while posteriorly the frontal bone and frontonasal suture provide bony context. Superiorly the procerus fibers approach the lower forehead, and inferiorly they taper toward the root of the nose, sitting medial to the orbital rim and anterior to deeper nasal structures. Functionally, procerus pulls the medial eyebrow inferiorly and produces transverse wrinkles over the bridge of the nose, a key component of frowning and glare expressions that clinicians assess in facial nerve (CN VII) motor exams. This lateral perspective helps clarify how superficial mimetic musculature relates to the frontal bone, nasal bones, and orbit, which matters when planning botulinum toxin injections for glabellar lines or when avoiding asymmetry from over-treatment near the corrugator supercilii and frontalis. Small muscle, common target. Its surface anatomy is easy to misread without bony landmarks.
