Description
Arising from the anterior superior iliac spine on the lateral pelvis, the sartorius descends anteroinferiorly across the thigh in an oblique course toward the medial side of the knee. From a lateral perspective, the muscle belly can be followed as it crosses anterior to the hip joint and then passes superficial to the anterior and medial compartments before curving posterior to the medial femoral condyle. The pelvis, acetabulum, and femoral shaft form the bony reference points, and the distal tendon tracks to the proximal medial tibia at the pes anserinus region. Clinically, this oblique straplike path is a useful surface landmark because it outlines the roof of the adductor (subsartorial) canal, where the femoral artery and vein transition toward the popliteal fossa and where the saphenous nerve becomes a key structure in medial leg and foot sensation. Pain at the proximal medial tibia in pes anserine bursitis is often discussed alongside the sartorius insertion, and the muscle’s relationship to the medial knee helps explain why combined hip flexion, abduction, and external rotation with knee flexion can reproduce symptoms in regional overuse syndromes. A long, simple line with a lot of teaching value.
