Description
Running obliquely across the anterior thigh, the sartorius is shown as a long, strap-like muscle arising from the anterior superior iliac spine and coursing inferomedially over the proximal femur toward the medial side of the knee. Proximally it lies superficial to the iliopsoas region and crosses the femoral triangle area, then continues distally to the anteromedial knee where it contributes to the pes anserinus on the medial surface of the proximal tibia. Pelvic landmarks and the femoral shafts frame the muscle’s diagonal path from lateral hip to medial knee. A clear surface landmark. Clinically, this anterior perspective matters because the sartorius forms the lateral boundary of the femoral triangle, a practical map for locating the femoral nerve, artery, and vein during vascular access and groin surgery. Its distal insertion at the pes anserinus also helps explain medial knee pain patterns, including pes anserine bursitis and tendinopathy that can follow overuse or accompany osteoarthritis. The muscle’s oblique line also serves as a guide when teaching anterior thigh compartment organization, since it crosses over the quadriceps group rather than running parallel with it.
