Description
Seen from the anterior in a male groin, the pectineus forms a flat, quadrilateral muscle belly at the proximal medial thigh, lying just inferior to the inguinal ligament and lateral to the adductor longus. Its fibers run inferolaterally from the superior ramus of the pubis (pecten pubis) toward the femur, where the tendon blends onto the pectineal line just posterior to the linea aspera and near the lesser trochanter. Medially, the pectineus borders the adductor compartment, while laterally it approaches the iliopsoas as both converge toward the femur. Skin and superficial fascia drape the region, but the muscle’s position anchors the base of the femoral triangle. Clinically, the pectineus is a reliable landmark on the floor of the femoral triangle, immediately posterior to the femoral vessels as they pass beneath the inguinal ligament, and its proximity helps orient femoral artery access and regional anesthesia planning. Strains at the pubic origin can mimic adductor longus tendinopathy in athletes with groin pain, and its mixed innervation pattern (commonly femoral nerve, sometimes with an obturator contribution) explains variable weakness patterns in lumbar plexopathy or obturator neuropathy. A small muscle with disproportionate teaching value. Use this anterior perspective for undergraduate regional anatomy labs when introducing the femoral triangle boundaries and the transition from pelvis to thigh, or for surgical education content on femoral hernia repair and femoral vascular cannulation where the pectineal fascia and pectineus underlay matter.
