Description
Centered on the anterior thigh, the rectus femoris runs superficially from the anterior inferior iliac spine and adjacent acetabular rim straight down the midline of the femur, lying between vastus lateralis laterally and vastus medialis medially. Distally, its tendon blends into the quadriceps tendon over the anterior knee, continuing through the patella to the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament. Bony landmarks of the femur and the proximal tibia frame the muscle belly, with the knee joint and ankle region included in the field for orientation. Clear landmarks. Rectus femoris matters because it is the only quadriceps head that crosses both the hip and knee, so its length and injury pattern differ from the vasti. Sprinting and kicking commonly produce proximal myotendinous tears or AIIS avulsion injuries in younger athletes, and this anterior exposure makes the proximal origin and the long, straight fiber direction easy to correlate with mechanism.
