Description
Anterior thigh anatomy is rendered with the skin removed, placing the rectus femoris in its characteristic midline position within the quadriceps femoris, superficial to the femoral shaft and bordered laterally and medially by the vastus lateralis and vastus medialis. Proximally, the iliopsoas occupies the anterior hip region, while the sartorius runs obliquely from superolateral to inferomedial, forming a long strap that crosses the quadriceps. Medially, the pectineus and portions of the adductor compartment (including adductor longus, with deeper adductors partially suggested) sit inferomedial to the femoral head and neck region, framing the transition toward the medial thigh. Color separation between muscle groups helps distinguish superficial from deeper layers over the femur. Rectus femoris is the only quadriceps head that crosses both the hip and knee, so its proximal relationship to the anterior inferior iliac spine and its distal continuity into the quadriceps tendon matter when teaching hip flexion combined with knee extension.
