Description
Seen from an anterior perspective, the adductor longus occupies the superficial medial thigh as a broad, triangular muscle belly that narrows into a distal tendon. Its proximal attachment arises from the body of the pubis just inferior and lateral to the pubic symphysis, then the fibers pass inferiorly and laterally across the proximal femur toward the middle third of the linea aspera. Medial to it, the gracilis forms a long strap descending toward the pes anserinus on the medial tibia, while laterally the sartorius and rectus femoris frame the femoral triangle and help orient the groin region. A clean landmark. This anterior view matters because the adductor longus is the most frequently injured adductor in athletes, and the proximal tendon and enthesis near the pubic bone are common pain generators in adductor strain and adductor-related groin pain. Palpation, ultrasound guidance, and MRI reporting often localize symptoms to the pubic origin and the proximal myotendinous junction, which lies anterior to adductor brevis and superficial to the anterior branch of the obturator nerve as it enters the medial compartment. The relationship to the pubic symphysis also helps differentiate adductor pathology from osteitis pubis and inguinal disruption patterns.
