Description
Centered on the medial thigh and groin of an adult male, the adductor longus is highlighted as a superficial strap muscle arising from the anterior body of the pubis just inferior to the pubic crest and coursing inferolaterally to the middle third of the linea aspera of the femur. Medial to it lies the gracilis, while the adductor brevis and adductor magnus sit deeper and more posterior, creating a layered adductor compartment against the femoral shaft. Proximally, its superior fibers define the medial boundary of the femoral triangle, with the sartorius forming the lateral border and the inguinal ligament spanning superiorly. That femoral triangle relationship is not academic trivia. Palpation, ultrasound, and open exposure of the femoral artery depend on accurate identification of the sartorius and adductor longus margins, and confusion at this level is a common reason for misplaced femoral access or hematoma tracking into the adductor canal. Groin strains in sprinting and change of direction sports often involve the adductor longus myotendinous junction or proximal tendon near the pubic symphysis, an injury pattern that overlaps clinically with athletic pubalgia and can be localized by resisted hip adduction and targeted imaging.
