Description

Anterior thigh anatomy is organized here around the adductor longus muscle in the male groin. The adductor longus arises from the body of the pubis just inferior to the pubic crest and runs inferolaterally to its insertion along the middle third of the linea aspera on the femur, forming a superficial triangular sheet medial to the femoral neurovascular bundle. Sartorius crosses obliquely from the anterior superior iliac spine toward the medial knee, lying superficial and lateral to the proximal adductor longus, while adductor magnus and gracilis sit posterior and medial, respectively, defining the medial compartment contours. Groin pain lives here. Acute adductor longus strain at the proximal myotendinous junction is common in kicking sports and is often confused with pubic aponeurosis injury (athletic pubalgia), so seeing the tendon’s pubic attachment and its relationship to the pubic symphysis helps when correlating focal tenderness and MRI signal change. The superficial position of adductor longus also makes it a palpable landmark for orienting medial thigh injections and for understanding how the obturator nerve branches distribute to the adductor compartment, while the overlying sartorius helps frame the adductor canal region where the femoral artery courses distally. Use this view for teaching medial thigh compartment anatomy in gross anatomy and kinesiology labs, or for illustrating adductor-related groin syndromes in sports medicine texts, radiology teaching files, and operative notes that describe open proximal adductor tenotomy or adductor release for refractory tendinopathy.
