Description
Anterior skin and superficial fascia are implied as the outer layer over the proximal medial thigh, with the adductor brevis highlighted deep to adductor longus and, proximally, just inferior to the pectineus near the pubic body and inferior pubic ramus. From this anterior perspective, the short muscle belly occupies the medial compartment, coursing inferolaterally to insert along the pectineal line and proximal linea aspera of the femur, while the larger adductor magnus lies posterior and more extensive. Medially, the gracilis borders the compartment as a long strap muscle, and laterally the femoral shaft provides a clear bony reference. Depth matters here. This angle is useful when teaching why adductor brevis can be a source of deep groin pain that is easy to miss on surface exam: it sits beneath more palpable adductors, yet shares the obturator nerve supply and contributes to resisted hip adduction. Strain injuries often localize near the pubic origin, overlapping the adductor longus origin, and radiate toward the medial thigh; correlating the layered anatomy helps differentiate adductor pathology from inguinal hernia, pubic symphysis stress injury, or iliopsoas-related pain. Surgeons working in the groin, including approaches for pelvic fracture fixation or adductor release procedures, also benefit from a mental map of what lies anterior to the obturator canal and what must be retracted to protect the obturator nerve and vessels.
