Description
Anteriorly, the adductor brevis occupies a deep, triangular layer of the medial thigh, lying inferior to the pubic body and ramus and running inferolaterally toward the proximal femur. Adductor longus typically overlies it superficially and slightly anterior, while adductor magnus sits posterior and more extensive, forming much of the medial compartment bulk. Medially, gracilis forms a slender strap along the thigh, and pectineus lies more superolateral, bridging the space toward the femoral triangle. Its insertion on the pectineal line and proximal linea aspera places it just medial to the proximal femoral shaft. Small but specific. This anterior perspective matters because adductor brevis is often the “missing layer” when learners move from surface anatomy to what surgeons and radiologists actually encounter in proximal medial thigh work. Groin pain in athletes frequently localizes to the adductor origin region, and distinguishing a superficial adductor longus strain from deeper adductor brevis tendinopathy changes both exam focus and image interpretation on ultrasound or MRI. Proximity to the anterior branch of the obturator nerve also makes this muscle relevant in obturator neuropathy, with pain and weakness in hip adduction that can mimic hip joint pathology.
