Description
Seen from a lateral perspective in partial cross section, the globe is opened to emphasize the choroidal venous drainage converging on the vorticose (vortex) veins. Multiple venules course within the choroid deep to the sclera and external to the retina, then sweep posteriorly and circumferentially to form larger tributaries that meet at the ampullae of the vortex veins. Anteriorly, the cornea transitions to sclera at the limbus, while posteriorly the optic nerve exits the globe, marking the relationship of the peripapillary region to the deeper venous pathways. Orientation is clear. Vorticose veins are the dominant outflow route of the choroid, so their tributary pattern is a practical map for understanding where blood can congest when outflow is impaired. This view supports clinical discussions of uveal effusion syndrome and choroidal detachment, where scleral thickening or impaired transscleral drainage can lead to choroidal venous congestion and serous retinal detachment.
