Description
Framed on the left lateral face and anterior neck, the anterior dilator naris (dilator naris anterior) is isolated just deep to the skin at the tip of the nose, superficial to the lateral nasal cartilage and immediately adjacent to the external naris. Superior and slightly lateral, the nasal musculature blends toward the alar region and the levator labii superioris alaeque nasi, while inferior continuity is suggested toward orbicularis oris at the upper lip. Posterior to the nasal complex, the masseter occupies the lateral ramus of the mandible with temporalis rising on the temporal fossa, and the auricle sits posterolateral to the zygomatic arch. Sternocleidomastoid descends obliquely along the anterolateral neck, with trapezius forming the posterior cervical contour. Cranial sutures remain visible as surface landmarks. Alar muscles are small, but they matter in airway mechanics and facial reconstruction. The anterior dilator naris acts to flare the nostril by drawing the alar rim laterally, a point that becomes clinically relevant when patients report nasal valve collapse or exercise induced nasal obstruction, and when surgeons plan rhinoplasty maneuvers that may weaken support at the external nasal valve. This lateral exposure also helps you teach how the nasal musculature relates to the cartilaginous framework, where minor soft tissue changes can produce outsized functional and cosmetic effects.
