Description
Arising from the maxillary region and blending into the nasal ala, the anterior dilator naris (dilator naris anterior) appears as fine superficial fibers immediately deep to the skin of the lateral nose. In a lateral facial view, its slips sit anterior and inferior to the nasalis and alar part of the nasalis, and they lie medial to the zygomaticus muscles and superior to the upper lip elevators near the nasolabial fold. Expect neighboring landmarks to include the orbicularis oculi superiorly around the palpebral fissure and the masseter posteriorly over the mandibular ramus. Fiber direction toward the nostril rim is the key cue. Clinically, this is one of the small but relevant alar muscles that modulates nasal valve aperture and nostril flare during inspiration. Small structures, big implications. When you teach rhinoplasty, cleft lip nasal deformity repair, or alar base reduction, this layer matters because subcutaneous dissection and suture placement can weaken or reorient the dilator mechanism, contributing to postoperative external nasal valve collapse and asymmetry. The superficial location also explains why botulinum toxin placed for perinasal rhytids or “bunny lines” can sometimes alter nostril dynamics.
