Description

Centered on the external nose in a frontal (anterior) perspective, the anterior dilator naris is highlighted as a small slip of muscle along the anterolateral margin of the nostril, superficial to the alar cartilage and adjacent to the nasal vestibule. Fibers course inferolaterally from the nasal fascia toward the rim of the naris, where they blend with the skin and the broader nasalis complex near the alar base. Superior and posterior to the muscle lie the nasal bones and piriform aperture, while the maxilla forms the inferolateral boundary of the nasal opening. Bony landmarks of the facial skeleton, the orbits, and the maxillary and mandibular dental arches remain visible for orientation. Small muscle. Big teaching point. Functionally, this view isolates a structure that is easy to ignore yet clinically relevant when discussing nasal valve mechanics, facial nerve driven mimic muscles, and conditions where nostril flaring becomes compensatory. During deep inspiration or exertion, the anterior dilator naris assists in widening the external naris and supporting the anterior nasal valve region, an area often implicated in nasal obstruction after rhinoplasty, trauma, or scarring of the alar rim. Surgeons and injectors also reference this anatomy when planning alar base procedures or avoiding distortion of the nostril margin during local flap design and soft-tissue manipulation around the nasal sill. Ideal for gross anatomy and head and neck modules, ENT teaching files on nasal airflow and obstruction, and medical publishing that needs a clean correlation between surface form and the underlying mimic musculature of the nose in an adult male. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
