Description
Seen in lateral profile, the anterior dilator naris (dilator naris anterior, part of the nasalis) lies superficial to the lateral nasal cartilage and courses inferolaterally toward the alar region, where its fibers blend with the skin and the fibroareolar tissue of the nasal ala. Medial to it sit the external nose and nostril (naris), while posteriorly the muscle approximates the alar cartilage and the margin of the anterior nasal aperture of the maxilla. Superior and posterior bony context includes the nasal bone, frontal process of the maxilla, and adjacent facial skeleton, with dentition and the mandible providing inferior facial landmarks. Sutures and the cervical spine are retained as orientation cues. For teaching nasal valve mechanics, this angle is hard to beat because it clarifies how a small facial muscle can influence nostril caliber by acting on the ala and adjacent cartilage rather than on bone. Weakness, scarring, or iatrogenic disruption of the dilator system can worsen external nasal valve collapse, a common contributor to nasal obstruction after rhinoplasty or facial trauma; the alar rim and lateral crus relationships are easier to discuss when the dilator naris anterior is shown against the alar cartilage. Small muscle, real consequences. Use it in head and neck anatomy courses when covering the muscles of facial expression, and in otolaryngology or facial plastic surgery texts to illustrate the soft tissue contributors to nasal patency near the alar rim. It also supports patient education diagrams explaining why alar batten grafts, suspension sutures, or targeted botulinum toxin injections may alter nasal airflow or nostril flare.
