Description
Frontal horn of the lateral ventricle occupies the anterosuperior portion of the cerebral hemisphere, extending anterior to the interventricular foramen (foramen of Monro) in a fixed lateral profile. Along its roof and anterior wall, the corpus callosum forms a smooth arching boundary, while the head of the caudate nucleus creates the prominent inferolateral floor. Medially, the septum pellucidum contributes a thin partition toward the midline, separating the paired frontal horns from each other. The foramen of Monro sits posteroinferior to the frontal horn’s tip, marking the transition toward the ventricular body. Clinical work often starts here. Enlargement of the frontal horn is a familiar marker in obstructive hydrocephalus at or near the foramen of Monro, and the relationship between the caudate head and ventricular wall helps explain why intraventricular hemorrhage can track along the ependyma with secondary injury to adjacent basal ganglia structures. The lateral viewpoint is practical for teaching because it clarifies the anterior extent of the horn relative to the callosal roof and highlights how narrow the frontal horn can appear before dilation.
