Description
Frontal horn of the lateral ventricle occupies the most anterior portion of the ventricular system within the frontal lobe. Superiorly and anteriorly, the cavity is capped by the genu and body of the corpus callosum, while the medial wall is formed by the septum pellucidum separating it from the contralateral ventricle. Inferolaterally, the head of the caudate nucleus creates a prominent bulge into the ventricle, and posteriorly the lumen narrows toward the interventricular foramen (of Monro) near the columns of the fornix. Orientation is anterior, within the cerebral hemispheres. Clinically, the frontal horn is a key landmark for ventricular size assessment in communicating and obstructive hydrocephalus, because subtle dilatation here often precedes more obvious enlargement of the temporal horn. The close relationship of the caudate head to the ventricular ependyma also explains why hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage or germinal matrix related intraventricular hemorrhage can extend into this space, layering dependently within the anterior ventricular cavity on cross-sectional imaging.
