Description
Arising superiorly from the thyroid cartilage, the hyoid bone sits anterosuperior to the laryngeal framework and anchors the thyrohyoid membrane as it descends to the superior border of the thyroid lamina. Curving posterior to the tongue base, the epiglottis projects superiorly and posteriorly, while the thyroid cartilage forms the dominant anterior and lateral wall, tapering inferiorly toward the cricothyroid region. Inferior to the thyroid cartilage, the cricoid cartilage completes the laryngeal skeleton as a ring, with the cricothyroid ligament bridging the gap between the two cartilages. Along the anterior and lateral surface, the cricothyroid muscle overlies the cricothyroid joint and points toward the internal location of the vocal folds and glottis. Clear landmarks. A lateral laryngeal view matters when you need the external correlates of phonation and airway access, because the relationships between the hyoid, thyroid notch, cricoid arch, and cricothyroid membrane determine where instruments and incisions safely go. Cricothyrotomy targets the cricothyroid ligament (membrane) just inferior to the thyroid cartilage and superior to the cricoid, a corridor chosen to avoid the vocal folds and reduce the risk of glottic injury. The same cricothyroid complex also explains pitch control: contraction tilts the thyroid cartilage anteriorly on the cricoid, lengthening and tensing the vocal cords.
