Description
Shown in lateral profile, the distal sigmoid colon curves inferiorly into the rectum, with pararectal lymphatic vessels traced within the mesorectal fat adjacent to the rectal wall. Fine lymph channels run longitudinally along the rectum and then converge posterolaterally toward pararectal lymph nodes, following the expected course alongside the superior rectal vessels and toward the inferior mesenteric nodal basin. Short connecting tributaries bridge the perirectal plexus to larger collecting trunks in the surrounding fatty tissue. Orientation is clear. This lateral depiction matters when you need to explain patterns of lymphatic drainage and tumor spread in rectal cancer, where mesorectal nodal involvement and proximal spread along the superior rectal and inferior mesenteric pathways drive staging, radiotherapy fields, and the surgical extent of a total mesorectal excision (TME).
