Description
Along the left lateral face and temple, the temporal branch of the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) ascends from the parotid region and crosses superficially over the zygomatic arch toward the frontotemporal scalp. The nerve runs anterior to the auricle and superficial to the temporalis fascia as it fans toward the forehead, lying in close relationship to the temporalis muscle superiorly and the masseter over the mandibular ramus inferiorly. Blue trigeminal nerve territory branches appear in the same field, allowing easy comparison between motor facial nerve pathways and adjacent sensory innervation. Red skeletal muscles, including temporalis, masseter, and sternocleidomastoid, anchor the regional topography. Temporal branch anatomy matters because it is the facial nerve division most exposed during lateral brow, temporal, and facelift approaches, where injury can denervate frontalis and upper orbicularis oculi, producing brow ptosis and impaired eyelid closure. Surgeons often reference its course as it traverses the zygomatic arch within the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) and temporoparietal fascia, a corridor where dissection planes and traction determine risk.
