Seen in lateral profile, the facial nerve (CN VII) exits the stylomastoid foramen posterior to the mandibular ramus and enters the parotid gland, where it divides into temporofacial and cervicofacial divisions and fans anteriorly as the parotid plexus. From this plexus, the temporal, zygomatic, buccal, marginal mandibular, and cervical branches radiate toward the muscles of facial expression, forming the characteristic pes anserinus pattern within parotid tissue. The chorda tympani is included as a named branch of CN VII, coursing from the tympanic cavity to join the lingual nerve in the infratemporal fossa, while adjacent landmarks such as the masseter and temporalis sit lateral to the skull and the sternocleidomastoid descends posteroinferiorly in the neck. Orientation matters.
