Description
Presented in right lateral profile, the vastus lateralis dominates the anterolateral thigh, lying superficial to the femoral shaft and blending distally into the quadriceps tendon and lateral patellar retinaculum on its way to the tibial tuberosity via the patellar ligament. Superiorly it approaches the greater trochanter and lateral lip of the linea aspera, while its broad aponeurosis fans inferiorly toward the lateral border of the patella. Posterior to it, the iliotibial tract and lateral hamstrings (biceps femoris) form the lateral contour of the thigh, with the gastrocnemius and soleus defining the posterior compartment of the leg and the anterior compartment muscles tapering toward the ankle. Orientation is clear.
