Description
Seen in lateral profile on a male thigh, the vastus lateralis occupies the anterolateral compartment of the quadriceps femoris, arising broadly from the proximal femur along the linea aspera and lateral lip of the gluteal tuberosity. Its muscle belly lies anterior to the short head of biceps femoris and inferior to the lateral aspect of gluteus maximus, then tapers distally toward the quadriceps tendon and lateral patellar retinaculum. Superiorly, the iliac crest and lateral ilium frame the hip region, while the femoral head and neck sit medial to the greater trochanter, defining the coxofemoral articulation in relation to the overlying lateral thigh musculature. Fiber direction is rendered obliquely, matching the broad pennation typical of vastus lateralis. A lateral view makes the vastus lateralis easy to localize for both functional anatomy and interventions because its bulk tracks the entire lateral femoral shaft and contributes strongly to knee extension and patellar tracking. Malalignment of the patella is a common teaching point here: imbalance between vastus lateralis and vastus medialis can increase lateral patellar tilt, a frequent feature in patellofemoral pain syndrome and recurrent lateral patellar instability. This is also a practical corridor. Orthopedic approaches to the femur and knee, and the placement of a lateral thigh incision, are planned with these relationships in mind.
