Description
Medial knee anatomy is presented with the distal femur seated on the medial tibial plateau, the articular cartilage capping both surfaces and the medial meniscus interposed along the joint line. Along the medial aspect of the joint, the superficial medial collateral ligament (tibial collateral ligament) courses from the medial femoral epicondyle inferiorly and slightly anteriorly to its broad tibial attachment, with the deep MCL and meniscotibial fibers blending into the peripheral margin of the medial meniscus. A jagged discontinuity at the tibial insertion margin marks the torn segment, while adjacent soft tissue shows reactive erythema consistent with acute fiber disruption. A medial perspective matters because it isolates the structure most often injured by valgus load and external rotation, the classic mechanism in contact sports and fall-related twisting injuries. Disruption near the tibial plateau raises the practical question of associated deep MCL and medial meniscal involvement, given their shared capsular and meniscotibial attachments and the tendency for medial joint line tenderness to reflect more than one injured layer.
