Description
Running along the posteromedial thigh, the adductor magnus forms a broad muscular sheet from the ischiopubic region to the linea aspera and distal femur, occupying the space posterior to the adductor longus and brevis and medial to the hamstring compartment. Its posterior (hamstring) fibers course more vertically toward the adductor tubercle, while the anterior (adductor) fibers angle to the midshaft femur, creating the characteristic fan-shaped sweep. Gracilis tracks superficially along the medial margin, and the femoral shaft provides a clear bony reference deep to the muscle belly. A long muscle with two jobs. Medial exposure of adductor magnus matters because it defines the adductor hiatus, the transition point where the femoral artery and vein leave the adductor canal and enter the popliteal fossa as the popliteal vessels.
