Description
Seen from a medial, right-sided orientation, the adductor longus lies superficially on the proximal medial thigh, forming a broad, flat muscular sheet just inferior to the pubis and anterior to the adductor magnus. Its fibers course inferolaterally toward the midshaft of the femur, placing it medial to the anterior thigh compartment and anterior to the hamstrings on the posterior thigh. The gracilis runs more medial and superficial along the inner thigh, descending toward the medial knee, and the femur, pelvis, tibia, fibula, and foot skeleton provide bony landmarks for proximal and distal attachment relationships. Clinically, this angle matters because adductor longus forms the medial border of the femoral triangle and contributes to the anterior boundary of the adductor (subsartorial) canal, where the femoral vessels and saphenous nerve transition toward the distal thigh. Groin pain after sprinting or sudden change of direction often localizes near the proximal tendon at the pubic body, and distinguishing adductor longus strain from hip flexor injury or athletic pubalgia depends on understanding this superficial medial anatomy.
