Description
Seen from the medial aspect with the knee flexed, the distal femur and proximal tibia form the tibiofemoral articulation, with the medial femoral condyle positioned superior to the medial tibial plateau. The adductor tubercle sits on the medial epicondylar region of the femur, just superior and posterior to the articular surface, and is shown as a palpable bony landmark. Anteriorly, the patella relates to the trochlear groove, while a blue medial meniscus wedges between femur and tibia within the joint line. Landmarks matter here. Flexion tightens the posterior capsule and shifts contact stresses posteriorly on the femoral condyles, so a medial view clarifies why meniscal and capsuloligamentous injuries behave differently at different knee angles. Orthopedic examinations and operative planning often rely on locating the adductor tubercle because it approximates the femoral attachment region of the medial collateral ligament and helps orient medial-sided repairs or reconstructions; it also guides placement of incisions for approaches to the medial joint line.
