Description
Layered beneath the facial skin, the depressor anguli oris (triangularis) is presented on a male hemiface as a superficial mimetic muscle arising from the oblique line of the mandible and coursing superiorly toward the modiolus at the oral commissure. Its fibers sit inferolateral to the corner of the mouth, blending with adjacent perioral musculature, with the masseter positioned more posterior and lateral along the mandibular ramus. The semitransparent treatment keeps the cutaneous surface and beard in register while allowing the mandibular margin and cheek contours to orient the viewer. Subtle bony landmarks of the zygomatic and mandibular regions frame the muscle’s position. Functionally, this muscle pulls the angle of the mouth inferolaterally and contributes to expressions of sadness or disapproval, so its relationship to the modiolus and to the depressor labii inferioris matters when teaching the architecture of the lower lip and oral commissure. Botulinum toxin injections intended to treat a downturned mouth corner, or to balance a hyperactive depressor complex, demand an accurate mental map of this superficial plane to avoid unwanted diffusion into the orbicularis oris and asymmetry during speech.
