Description
Seen from a posterior thoracic perspective under the dermal layer, the external intercostal muscles occupy the intercostal spaces between adjacent ribs, their fibers running inferoanteriorly from the inferior border of each rib toward the superior border of the rib below. Laterally, the muscle bellies appear most developed, while medially they approach the costotransverse region near the thoracic vertebrae, where rib angles and the posterior rib contours give clear attachment context. The ribs form a repeating bony framework deep to the muscle layer, and the thoracic spinous processes provide a midline reference for left and right intercostal spacing. This is rib-by-rib anatomy. Functionally, external intercostals elevate the ribs during inspiration, and this posterior view helps clarify why their mechanical advantage concentrates around the rib angles and lateral thoracic wall rather than at the sternum, where the muscular portion transitions toward the external intercostal membrane.
