Description
Originating in the distal palm, the common palmar digital nerves course anterior to the metacarpals and then split into proper palmar digital nerves along the adjacent sides of digits II to V, tracking toward the proximal and middle phalanges. From a posterior (dorsal) perspective, the phalanges, metacarpals, and carpal bones provide the bony framework, while the highlighted nerve branches remain positioned on the palmar aspect, just volar to the deep transverse metacarpal ligaments and near the digital arteries. Fine dorsal digital nerves may be visible near the lateral margins of the fingers where palmar innervation overlaps dorsally. Clean branching anatomy. This viewpoint matters when you need to teach palmar sensory territories while keeping a clear read on skeletal landmarks that guide clinical localization. Median nerve lesions at the carpal tunnel often spare sensation over the thenar eminence (palmar cutaneous branch) yet disrupt palmar digital sensation to the radial three and a half digits, while ulnar neuropathy at Guyon canal preferentially affects the common palmar digital branches to digits IV and V. Surgeons and anesthetists also rely on the predictable relationship between the palmar digital nerves and accompanying digital vessels when planning digital nerve blocks, laceration repair, or exploring neuroma after a volar finger injury.
