Description
Oriented in anatomical position, the anterior (palmar) hand is rendered with the carpal bones, metacarpals, and phalanges forming a pale osseous scaffold beneath the superficial neurovascular bundles. Proper palmar digital nerves run longitudinally along the adjacent sides of each digit from the level of the metacarpophalangeal joints toward the distal phalanges, paired with accompanying digital vessels shown in blue. Proximal in the palm, these proper nerves arise as terminal branches of the common palmar digital nerves, which in turn derive from the median nerve laterally and the superficial branch of the ulnar nerve medially, so the sensory territories align with the radial three and one half digits versus the ulnar one and one half digits. Color contrast keeps the nerve course readable against joint spaces and the palmar arches. Clinical relevance centers on where these nerves live: immediately volar to the flexor tendon sheath and close to the digital arteries, making them vulnerable in palmar lacerations, ring avulsion injuries, and Dupuytren contracture surgery. Palmar digital nerve injury produces dense fingertip sensory loss and neuroma pain, and the distribution helps you localize lesions at the carpal tunnel (median) versus Guyon canal (ulnar). Fine discrimination depends on them. This anterior view also supports teaching safe incision placement along the midlateral line to reduce iatrogenic injury during trigger finger release or digital revascularization exposure. Use this asset in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching blocks to link peripheral nerve branching with cutaneous maps, and in hand surgery texts describing digital exploration, repair, and flap planning where the proper palmar digital nerves serve as constant landmarks. It also fits patient-facing procedural diagrams for nerve repair, replantation, and sensory testing documentation in hand therapy clinics.
