Posterior Perspective of the Profunda Brachii Artery

Description

Running on the posterior aspect of the arm, the profunda brachii artery (deep brachial artery) branches from the brachial artery proximally and tracks inferiorly along the posterior humerus within the radial (spiral) groove. Its course places it deep to the triceps brachii, closely accompanying the radial nerve as both pass from the medial side of the arm toward the lateral side. Distally, the vessel approaches the lateral intermuscular septum and contributes to the periarticular arterial network around the elbow via collateral branches, while the main brachial artery continues anterior to the humerus toward the cubital fossa. Bony landmarks, including the humeral shaft, olecranon region, and the radius and ulna, orient the vessel’s relationship to the elbow and forearm. Posterior visualization matters because the profunda brachii is the key arterial companion of the radial nerve, and both are exposed in midshaft humeral fractures and posterior surgical exposures of the humerus.
