Description
Positioned deep to the gluteus maximus on the posterior hip, the quadratus femoris spans from the lateral border of the ischial tuberosity to the quadrate tubercle on the intertrochanteric crest of the femur. Its fibers run almost horizontally, lying inferior to the obturator internus tendon and the gemelli, and posterior to the hip joint capsule. Superiorly, the acetabulum and proximal femur frame the muscle’s lateral attachment, while the sacrum and posterior iliac crest provide midline pelvic landmarks for orientation. Short and blocky. Because quadratus femoris functions as a strong lateral rotator and adductor of the thigh, a posterior perspective is the one most educators use to explain deep gluteal anatomy after reflecting gluteus maximus.
