Description
Seen from the posterior thorax, the rhomboid minor is highlighted deep to the superficial back musculature, spanning from the midline spinous processes of C7 to T1 to the medial (vertebral) border of the scapula near the level of the scapular spine. Medial fibers arise adjacent to the vertebral column and course inferolaterally to their scapular insertion, sitting superior to the rhomboid major and inferior to the levator scapulae. The scapulae lie lateral to the thoracic spinous processes, with the posterior ribs curving laterally beneath them. Compact. Discrete. Rhomboid minor anatomy matters when you are teaching or treating scapular dyskinesis and cervical-thoracic junction pain, because weakness or inhibition shifts scapular position into protraction and anterior tilt, commonly paired with overactivity of the upper trapezius and levator scapulae.
