Description
Calcaneus anatomy is centered here on the anterior process, viewed from a posterior perspective that keeps the heel bone in fixed orientation while emphasizing the lateral column of the foot. The anterior process projects anterolaterally from the calcaneal body, lying inferior to the talar articular facets and posterior to the cuboid-facing surface that forms the calcaneocuboid component of the transverse tarsal (Chopart) joint. From this angle, the superior margin of the process reads as a distinct bony shelf, while the lateral contour transitions into the calcaneal wall near the sinus tarsi region. Dense cortical edges define the process. Anterior process morphology matters because it is a common site of avulsion and impaction fractures after inversion injuries, often mistaken clinically for a simple ankle sprain when pain localizes to the lateral midfoot near the calcaneocuboid joint.
