Description
Centered in the popliteal fossa, the popliteal artery descends posterior to the knee joint capsule and travels with the popliteal vein, the vein lying superficial to the artery in typical anatomical layering. Proximally, the vessel continues from the femoral artery after passing through the adductor hiatus, then runs inferiorly between the medial and lateral heads of gastrocnemius, deep to the biceps femoris laterally and the semimembranosus and semitendinosus medially. Distal branching toward the anterior and posterior compartments is suggested at the level of the tibial plateau, where the popliteal artery divides into the anterior tibial artery and the tibioperoneal trunk. Surrounding musculature frames the neurovascular corridor. A posterior view like this is the one surgeons and interventionalists picture when they think about popliteal artery entrapment and iatrogenic risk during posterior knee exposure.
