Description
Posterior anatomy of the male lower limb is presented with the pelvis, femur, tibia, fibula, patella, and the tarsal and metatarsal bones acting as fixed landmarks for the vascular tree. Proximally, the femoral vessels transition through the adductor hiatus into the popliteal artery and popliteal vein, which sit deep in the popliteal fossa posterior to the knee joint. Distal to the knee, tibial and fibular (peroneal) vessels descend toward the ankle, while superficial venous channels track in the subcutaneous tissue, joining deeper veins via perforators. Relationship is the point. A posterior projection matters because it clarifies where deep vessels run relative to the knee and calf compartments, and it frames the popliteal fossa as a high-stakes corridor for vascular injury and iatrogenic complication. Popliteal artery compromise after knee dislocation or tibial plateau fracture can be limb-threatening even when distal pulses seem present, and this view reinforces why clinicians assess perfusion and consider CTA early. It also supports venous teaching: the superficial system is not simply parallel to the arterial tree, and thrombosis can propagate through named segments into the deep venous system.
