Description
Seen from the lateral aspect, the femur descends from the acetabulum toward the knee, with the patella positioned anterior to the distal femur and the tibia and fibula running inferiorly in parallel, the fibula lying lateral to the tibial shaft. Superficial and deep vascular channels track along the lateral thigh and leg, with red arteries and blue veins accompanying the long bones toward the ankle and dorsum of the foot. Proximally, vessels course anterior and posterior to the lateral femoral condyle before continuing distally along the lateral compartment, where the fibular (peroneal) artery and its venae comitantes typically sit posterior to the fibula and send perforators toward the anterior compartment and lateral malleolar region. Bony landmarks stay readable throughout. A lateral leg vascular view matters when you need to teach where arterial inflow and venous return travel relative to palpable bone and joint landmarks. Lateral compartment pathology and surgery often live here, including fibular fracture fixation, lateral fasciotomy for compartment syndrome, and flap planning that relies on perforators from the fibular artery.
