Description
Seen in lateral profile, the cervical vasculature is organized around the common carotid artery ascending within the carotid sheath to the carotid bifurcation, where the internal carotid turns superiorly toward the cranial base and the external carotid gives off facial, lingual, occipital, posterior auricular, superficial temporal, and maxillary branches to the scalp and face. Parallel venous channels include the internal jugular vein running lateral to the carotid arteries, receiving tributaries from the face and neck, with the external jugular coursing more superficially across the sternocleidomastoid toward the subclavian vein. Inferiorly, the great vessels continue into the superior mediastinum, with the aortic arch and brachiocephalic circulation suggested at the thoracic inlet. Color coding separates arterial and venous pathways. A lateral rendering clarifies relationships that drive both imaging interpretation and operative planning, especially the proximity of the internal jugular vein to the carotid artery during central venous catheterization and the position of the carotid bifurcation near the level of the upper thyroid cartilage. Carotid atherosclerotic disease concentrates at the bifurcation and proximal internal carotid, the same segment targeted in carotid endarterectomy and routinely assessed on Doppler ultrasound, CT angiography, and MR angiography. Venous drainage patterns matter too, because internal jugular thrombosis and jugular bulb variants can complicate head and neck infection, skull base surgery, and interpretation of contrast studies. Ideal for teaching head and neck anatomy in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, and ENT modules, this illustration also supports radiology and vascular surgery publications discussing carotid stenosis, facial artery perfusion, or jugular access techniques.
