Description
Centered on the posterior compartment of the forearm, the extensor digitorum forms a broad superficial muscle belly arising from the lateral epicondyle and proximal ulna, then narrowing distally into multiple tendons that pass toward the dorsum of the hand. Lateral to it, the extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis create a distinct radial mass, while the extensor carpi ulnaris defines the ulnar border as its tendon approaches the ulnar styloid. Distal to the forearm, the extensor digitorum tendons course deep to the extensor retinaculum and continue across the metacarpals toward the dorsal digital expansions over the proximal phalanges. The skin layer is conceptually present but removed to expose the superficial extensor plane. Because this is a posterior view, tendon trajectories and compartmental anatomy at the wrist read clearly, including the way the extensor digitorum tendons flatten into the extensor hoods and interconnect via juncturae tendinum over the dorsum of the hand.
