Description
Posteriorly, the male wrist and proximal hand are rendered with the carpal bones in clear relief, including the distal radius and ulna proximally, the proximal carpal row (scaphoid, lunate, triquetrum, pisiform) and distal carpal row (trapezium, trapezoid, capitate, hamate), and the bases of the metacarpals distally. Along the ulnar (medial) side, the triangular fibrocartilage complex (often referred to clinically as the triangular ligament) spans from the ulnar styloid and ulnar fovea toward the proximal carpal row, forming a wedge-shaped stabilizer deep to the extensor tendons. Overlying dorsal fascia and the extensor retinaculum are positioned superficially, with extensor tendon paths implied across the dorsum. Ulnar-sided wrist pain is where this anatomy earns its keep. Tears of the TFCC after a fall on an extended wrist, or degeneration with positive ulnar variance, can destabilize the distal radioulnar joint and reproduce pain with forearm rotation and ulnar deviation, a pattern that guides both examination maneuvers and imaging interpretation. This posterior perspective also suits discussions of dorsal ulnar surgical corridors, where protecting the dorsal sensory branch of the ulnar nerve and maintaining extensor compartment integrity matters. In teaching, the plate works well for upper limb anatomy labs, hand surgery lectures, and sports medicine modules that link osseous landmarks to soft tissue stabilizers at the DRUJ.
