Description
Dominating the posterolateral thigh, the vastus lateralis forms a broad muscular mass that hugs the lateral surface of the femoral shaft and wraps anteriorly toward the patella. Superiorly it approaches the lateral hip, lying deep to the distal fibers of gluteus maximus and adjacent to the tensor fasciae latae contribution into the iliotibial tract, while posteriorly its border meets the lateral intermuscular septum and the short head of biceps femoris. Distally, the muscle narrows into the quadriceps tendon and lateral patellar retinaculum, sitting lateral to rectus femoris and vastus intermedius and anterior to the hamstring compartment.
