Description
Viewed superiorly, the zygomatic bone (os zygomaticum, malar or cheekbone) is oriented with its broad body laterally and the frontal process projecting superiorly toward the frontal bone at the frontozygomatic suture. Medially, the orbital surface contributes to the lateral wall and rim of the orbit, while the temporal surface faces posteriorly toward the infratemporal region. The maxillary process extends anteromedially toward the maxilla, and the temporal process projects posteriorly to meet the zygomatic process of the temporal bone, completing the zygomatic arch. Strong cortical contours dominate. A top-down perspective on the zygoma helps clarify how the frontozygomatic buttress transmits masticatory and facial impact forces into the frontal bone, a relationship that matters in zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures. Surgeons reference the frontozygomatic suture and zygomatic arch when planning open reduction and internal fixation, and this orientation also supports teaching of orbital rim anatomy relevant to lateral orbital wall exposure.
