Description
Centered in an anterior skull view, the paired zygomatic bones (os zygomaticum, malar bones) are highlighted bilaterally, forming the most lateral contour of the midface. Each zygoma articulates medially with the maxilla at the zygomaticomaxillary suture and superiorly with the frontal bone at the frontozygomatic suture, contributing to the inferolateral orbital rim. Laterally, the zygomatic bone projects toward the temporal region as the temporal process, the anterior component of the zygomatic arch. Clear landmarks. Frontal orientation makes the zygoma’s role in the orbital aperture and cheek projection easy to judge, which is exactly what you need when teaching facial buttresses and the relationship between the orbit and midface. Clinically, this region is central to zygomaticomaxillary complex fractures, where disruption at the frontozygomatic suture, infraorbital rim, and zygomaticomaxillary buttress can widen the face, flatten the malar eminence, and increase orbital volume with enophthalmos. The highlighted zygomatic bones also cue the pathway of the infraorbital nerve as it exits the infraorbital foramen just inferior to the orbital rim, a common site of sensory deficit after midfacial trauma and a target for regional anesthesia. Use this illustration in head and neck anatomy courses, radiology teaching files when correlating with Waters and Caldwell projections or CT of the orbits, and in maxillofacial surgery or emergency medicine materials explaining fracture patterns and fixation points along the lateral orbital rim and zygomatic buttress.
