Description
Anteriorly, the os temporale is framed by the lateral orbital margin and the arch of the cheek, with the zygomatic process of the temporal bone projecting anterolaterally to meet the zygomatic bone and complete the zygomatic arch. Medial to that arch, the mandibular fossa and articular tubercle sit inferior to the root of the zygomatic process, marking the temporal contribution to the temporomandibular joint. Posteroinferiorly, the mastoid process forms a blunt prominence behind the external acoustic meatus, while the petrous part angles medially toward the middle cranial fossa and the region of the carotid canal. Bony landmarks read well in this projection. For teaching and clinical correlation, an anterior perspective clarifies how the temporal bone relates to the orbit and midface, where fractures often propagate along the zygomaticomaxillary complex and can disrupt the zygomatic arch with visible facial widening and trismus from coronoid impingement. Surgeons planning a preauricular approach to the TMJ or open reduction of arch fractures rely on these surface landmarks, because the articular eminence and zygomatic root guide safe dissection planes near the superficial temporal vessels and the temporal branches of the facial nerve.
